Countertop and Cabinet Cost Calculator

HomeAdvisor's countertop and cabinet guides, with the countertop guide's two sets of figures side by side

HomeAdvisor's countertop guide prices granite at $80 to $150 per square foot installed in its text and at $10 to $140 per square foot installed in its own table, on the same page. This calculator measures your countertop, prices it both ways, and adds the cutouts, the edge, removal and, if you are replacing them too, the cabinets.

Material rows are the figures the guide gives in its paragraph on each material. The same guide's material table, also headed installed, gives different figures for most of them; that table is printed separately.

The table is headed average cost per square foot installed. Its granite row starts at $10 against $80 in the text of the same page, and its porcelain and travertine ranges do not overlap the text's at all.

Source: HomeAdvisor, how much does it cost to install kitchen cabinets. Last price check: September 16, 2026.

The source says the average kitchen has 24 linear ft of cabinets and prices that at $2,400 to $28,000, which is $100 to $1,167 per linear ft; its per foot table runs to $1,200.

Worked example

30 ft of granite countertop 25 in deep, one sink, a straight edge, and the old top removed.

  1. Area. 30 × 25 ÷ 12 = 62.5 sq ft.
  2. Granite, text figure. 62.5 × $80 to $150 = $5,000 to $9,375.
  3. Sink cutout $100 to $300, straight edge 30 ft × $0 to $5 = $0 to $150, removal and disposal $70 to $325.
  4. Total. $5,170 to $10,150. With the table's $10 to $140 granite figure instead: $795 to $9,525.

The low ends are more than six times apart. That is the difference between the guide's two granite figures, not anything about the kitchen.

The formula

Area from the plan, then each published rate times the quantity it is priced on:

area = length × depth ÷ 12 + island length × island width
length
countertop run along the walls, ft
depth
wall to front edge, in
edge length
the wall run plus the island perimeter, ft

Cutouts are priced each, the edge per linear foot, removal as one job and cabinets per linear foot of cabinet.

Where the numbers come from

Every price is HomeAdvisor's, from its countertop guide updated 17 June 2026 and its cabinet installation guide updated 20 June 2026, both read on 16 September 2026. This site publishes no price of its own.

The area and edge arithmetic is this page's. The decision to show both of the countertop guide's material figures, rather than pick one, is also this page's.

One guide, two installed prices per square foot

HomeAdvisor's countertop guide has a material table headed average cost per square foot, installed. Further down, it has a paragraph on each material that gives another installed price per square foot. For most materials the two do not match.

HomeAdvisor countertop guide, updated June 2026, per sq ft installed
MaterialTextTable
Granite$80 to $150$10 to $140
Quartz$50 to $200$15 to $70
Laminate$20 to $80$8 to $27
Travertine$70 to $150$11 to $35
Porcelain$50 to $120$3 to $28
Butcher block$50 to $150$50 to $150
Stainless steel$80 to $200$80 to $200

Of the 14 materials on this page, the two figures agree for three: butcher block, stainless steel and recycled glass. Concrete agrees at the low end only. For travertine and porcelain the ranges do not overlap at all. A porcelain countertop cannot be both $28 and $50 a square foot at the cheapest.

One reading is that the table is closer to a material price and the text to an installed one, since the table's low end is below or equal to the text's for every material. Marble does not fit it, with a table top of $190 against $150 in the text. The guide does not explain the difference, and this page does not assume one. It shows both totals, and a quote that lands between them is consistent with the source either way.

Square feet of countertop, measured the way it is priced

Countertops are priced per square foot of top, so the measurement is length times depth, not the floor area of the kitchen. A 30 ft run at 25 in deep is only 62.5 sq ft, which is why a whole kitchen of countertop is a smaller number than people expect.

Measure each wall run along the back edge and add them. Where two runs meet in a corner, the corner square is counted once, so measure one run to the wall and the other only to the front edge of the first. An island is its own rectangle, and it adds edge on all four sides, which this calculator counts.

HomeAdvisor's guide prices 20 to 30 sq ft at $1,000 to $4,500 and 40 to 60 sq ft at $6,000 to $9,000 or more, and gives a typical replacement of $1,882 to $4,485. At the text's $80 to $150 granite figure, $1,882 buys 12.5 to 23.5 sq ft and $4,485 buys 29.9 to 56 sq ft.

Cabinets by the linear foot

HomeAdvisor's cabinet guide prices installed cabinets per linear foot of cabinet: $100 to $300 for stock, $150 to $650 for semi-custom and $500 to $1,200 for custom. It separates the labor of hanging them at $50 to $450 per linear foot, and removal of old cabinets at $350 to $800.

It also says the average kitchen has 24 linear feet of cabinets and prices that kitchen at $2,400 to $28,000. At its own per foot table the top would be $28,800. Linear feet of cabinet is not the same number as linear feet of countertop when there are wall cabinets as well as base cabinets, so count the two rows separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much do countertops cost per square foot?
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide gives installed prices per square foot in two places that disagree. In its text: laminate $20 to $80, quartz $50 to $200, granite $80 to $150, marble $40 to $150 and butcher block $50 to $150. In its material table: laminate $8 to $27, quartz $15 to $70, granite $10 to $140 and marble $15 to $190. This calculator prices your area both ways.
How much does it cost to install cabinets?
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 cabinet guide gives $1,935 to $10,763 for a typical kitchen, $6,188 on average. Per linear foot installed it gives $100 to $300 for stock cabinets, $150 to $650 for semi-custom and $500 to $1,200 for custom. Removing the old cabinets adds $350 to $800.
What is the labor cost to install cabinets?
HomeAdvisor gives $50 to $450 per linear foot for the labor of hanging cabinets, depending on the cabinet type. Its installed per foot prices, $100 to $1,200, include the cabinets. Moving plumbing is priced at $45 to $200 an hour and moving wiring at $50 to $100 an hour where the new layout needs it.
How many square feet of countertop is a kitchen?
Length along the walls times depth, plus any island. A 30 ft run at 25 in deep is 62.5 sq ft. HomeAdvisor's guide groups kitchens by 20 to 30, 30 to 40 and 40 to 60 or more square feet of countertop.
How much does a sink cutout cost?
HomeAdvisor gives $100 to $300 for a sink cutout, $120 to $400 for a cooktop and $20 to $125 for an outlet or faucet hole.
How much does a countertop edge cost?
HomeAdvisor prices edge profiles per linear foot: straight $0 to $5, eased $0 to $15, bevel and bullnose $10 to $15, mitered and ogee $20 to $25, and Dupont $20 to $40. The edge length is the exposed front edge, which on an island is all four sides.
Is quartz more expensive than granite?
It depends which of HomeAdvisor's figures you read. In the guide's text quartz is $50 to $200 against granite at $80 to $150, so quartz is cheaper at the low end and dearer at the top. In the guide's table quartz is $15 to $70 against granite at $10 to $140.
How much does it cost to paint or refinish kitchen cabinets?
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide does not price painting on its own. The same publisher's cabinet installation guide says refinishing, which is sanding and then painting or staining the existing cabinets, averages about $3,100 for a whole kitchen, against $1,935 to $10,763 to install new ones.
