Deck & Railing Calculators
Decks have their own chapter in the residential code, and it is stricter than people expect.
IRC Section R507 exists because decks fail more often than the rest of the house. They are exposed to weather on every face, they are frequently built without permits, and when they collapse they do it while loaded with people. So the code treats a deck as its own structure with its own tables — R507.5 for beams, R507.6 for joists, R507.4 for posts — rather than borrowing the interior floor framing tables.
The wet service assumption is the reason. Deck lumber is designed damp, which costs about 15% of its allowable bending stress, and that is why the same 2×10 spans further inside a house than it does outside. Any calculator that gives you one span figure for both has quietly used the wrong one.
Guards are a separate chapter
Guard requirements live in R312, not R507, and they carry three different opening limits depending on where you are standing: a 4 in sphere on a level guard, 4⅜ in on the open side of a stair, and 6 in for the triangular gap between riser, tread and bottom rail. Most tools report only the first. The load requirement — 200 lb concentrated at any point along the top, from Table R301.5 — is what actually governs the post connection, and it is what fails inspection far more often than baluster spacing does.
