How to Finish Drywall
Finishing drywall is not one method. The Gypsum Association defines six levels of finish, and the familiar tape and three coats is only one of them, written for flat paint. This guide works from that document and from USG's product sheets: which level a room needs, the temperature to hold, how each coat goes on, how to sand, and the figures the documents leave out.
Three coats is Level 4, and Level 4 is written for flat paint
Most how-to pages on this job describe the same sequence: tape, two more coats, sand, prime, paint. That sequence is real, and it has a name. In GA-214-2021, the Gypsum Association document that defines levels of finish, it is Level 4: tape embedded and wiped, two separate coats over flat joints, one separate coat over inside corners, three coats over fastener heads and accessories.
What the how-to pages leave out is the sentence that sits above that recipe. GA-214 says Level 4 is typically specified where smooth walls get flat paints, light textures or wallcoverings, and that non-flat or dark and deep tone paints are not recommended over it. For those, the document points you to Level 5, which is the same three coats plus a skim coat over the entire surface, not just the joints. It gives the same answer for critical lighting, meaning strong side light from windows or surface-mounted fixtures.
So the finding is simple and it changes the plan before you buy anything. If the room is getting eggshell, satin or semi-gloss, a deep color, or a long wall beside a big window, the three-coat method is not the finish the industry document describes for it. USG's white paper J2010 agrees, and gives the reason: under sheen, the difference between face paper and smoothed compound shows.
Pick the level before you open a bucket
GA-214 defines six levels, 0 through 5, and each one is a minimum rather than a quality grade. The level is chosen by where the wall is and what goes on it. This is a condensed reading of the document's scope and requirements for each.

Note that Level 3 is explicitly not the level for smooth walls, and that a garage at Level 2 is within the document.
GA-214 also says that where a manufacturer's recommendations differ from its own, the manufacturer's recommendations should be followed. That matters in a moment, because USG's instructions for its All Purpose compound ask for more coats at inside corners than GA-214 does at Level 4.
What a room takes: board, tape and compound
The drywall calculator on this site counts sheets and tape from room dimensions, and deliberately does not count compound. The table below runs its arithmetic on five common rooms, then adds one published figure: USG prints a coverage of approximately 10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft of panels for Sheetrock All Purpose ready-mix compound, and approximately 52 lb per 1,000 sq ft for Easy Sand setting-type powder.

This is this site's arithmetic. Doors are taken at 3 by 6.67 ft. Board area, sheets and tape follow the drywall calculator's method, where tape is the sheet's width plus length for every sheet bought, plus the waste allowance. The compound columns are board area multiplied by USG's coverage rates and nothing else.
Read the compound columns with one limit in mind. USG does not say which level of finish its coverage figure assumes, and neither submittal publishes a separate rate for a Level 5 skim coat. At 10 gallons per 1,000 sq ft, the 14 by 12 room is about 6 gallons, which is more than one 4.5 gallon pail and less than two. No document read for this guide says how much a skim coat over the whole surface adds.
Get the room warm and keep it there
The documents do not agree on the minimum temperature, so here are all three.
- GA-214-2021: a minimum of 50°F maintained continuously for 48 hours before finishing starts and throughout, until the building is complete or occupied. For hot, cold, humid or dry extremes it refers you to a separate Gypsum Association document, GA-236.
- USG All Purpose and Easy Sand submittals: a minimum of 55°F inside the building during joint finishing, with ventilation to carry off excess moisture.
- USG Easy Sand submittal, cold weather: surface, water, mix and air all at 45°F or above until the joints are completely dry.
This site's reading is to hold 55°F, which satisfies all of them, and to start two days early. GA-214 and J2010 both also ask for temperature, humidity and airflow to stay constant.
USG's ready-mix submittal also says to keep the compound at 55 to 95°F for 24 hours before use, remix it, and if you thin it, add clean water in half-pint increments. It warns that over-dilution causes abnormal shrinkage and poor bond.
Drying compound or setting compound
The two USG products in this guide finish joints by different chemistry, and the choice decides how fast you can move.
Ready-mix all purpose compound is a drying type. It hardens as water leaves it. The USG submittal says to let each coat dry before the next, and it does not publish a drying time.
Setting-type powder such as Easy Sand hardens by chemical reaction, and USG describes it as permitting same-day joint finishing and usually next-day decoration. The number in the product name is the approximate working time in minutes:

The limitations list on the same sheet is the useful part. Adding water does not delay or prevent the set. Mix only what you can use inside the working time, in a clean container each batch, and do not re-temper it. Cold mixing water, below 55°F, tends to lengthen setting and hot water shortens it. If the compound dries before it sets, bond can fail, and application at less than 1/8 in thick or onto a porous surface may prevent the set altogether. That last limit is why USG says not to use setting compound for thin skim coats.
Coat one: fill the gap, then bed the tape
Both submittals say panels must be free of dirt and oil before compound goes on.
With setting compound, USG's sequence starts one step earlier than most guides: prefill any gap where two tapered edges meet, using a flexible 5 or 6 in knife, wipe off whatever lands beyond the groove, and let the prefill harden before the taping coat.
Then the taping coat, which the two submittals describe in nearly the same words. Spread a thin layer of compound over the joint, press the paper tape into it, and leave about 1/32 in of compound under the feathered edge of the tape. The Easy Sand sheet adds a thin layer over the tape as well.
GA-214 adds the timing word that matters. From Level 3 upward, tape embedded in compound is to be immediately wiped with a joint knife, leaving a thin coating over the joints and inside corners.
Coats two and three: feather wider every time
For ready-mix, USG's instruction is to let the tape coat dry, then apply the second coat feathered about 2 in beyond the first. Once that dries, remove tool marks by dry troweling, scraping or sanding lightly, then apply the third coat feathered 2 in beyond the second, and sand lightly when dry. The Easy Sand sequence is the same widths, with each coat going on after the one below has set rather than dried, and tool laps smoothed away before the set.
Both documents make a point that runs against instinct. Finishing compound sits on top of the panel, so a perfectly flat wall is not possible. USG says concealment relies on graduated arcs of compound that avoid recesses or ridges, and on not applying compound flush or flat to the panel. USG says flush compound raises the chance of joints and fasteners showing through paint.
Corners and fasteners. Here the sources differ, and the difference is in the direction of more work:
- GA-214 Level 4 asks for three coats over fasteners and accessories, and one separate coat over inside corners beyond the embedding coat.
- USG's All Purpose submittal asks for at least three coats on fastener heads, corner bead and inside corners.
- USG's Easy Sand submittal asks for at least two coats on corner bead and inside corners, and notes that the number of coats may vary with jobsite conditions.
Since GA-214 defers to the manufacturer where they differ, the product on the pail is the one to follow.
Sanding: less of it, and never down to the paper
GA-214 and J2010 agree on the approach. Apply compound as smoothly as possible so there is little to sand, and do not sand it flush to the panel. J2010 adds that roughened face paper leaves raised fibers that show after painting, and that accidental damage is repaired with a little compound on a broad knife rather than more sanding.
Grit. GA-214 only says to use the finest grit that still sands at an acceptable rate. J2010 gives numbers: good results with 150-grit sandpaper or finer, 220-grit abrasive mesh or finer, or 80 micron sanding film or finer. It warns that coarse media can leave scratches that show after painting.
Wet sanding. J2010 calls a damp sponge the preferred alternative to dry sanding where little sanding is needed, says it produces no dust and is less likely to scuff the face, and is clear that it is not a way to remove large amounts of compound or rescue badly finished joints. For dry sanding, USG recommends a sanding tool with a HEPA vacuum, and both compound submittals call for a NIOSH-approved respirator, a well-ventilated space and eye protection. Remove all sanding dust before any primer or skim coat goes on.
Skim, prime, and inspect from where people will stand
If the room needs Level 5, J2010 gives two routes over a finished Level 4 surface: USG's Tuff-Hide primer-surfacer, or a skim coat of conventional weight Sheetrock All Purpose compound followed by a full coat of USG's drywall primer. It rules out topping compound, other specialty finishing compounds and any powder compound, drying or setting, as skim coat material.
GA-214 describes the skim itself: compound at trowel consistency, forced into the surface with a broad knife and the excess sheared off, aiming for total coverage. It states that no specific mil thickness defines a proper skim coat, that a skim coat will not approximate plaster, and that joints and fastener spots may still be visible once it dries. If the goal is a true plastered surface, that is a different system; the plaster calculator covers it.
Priming. Every surface, compound included, must be thoroughly dry, dust free and not glossy before decorating, per both USG submittals. They recommend an undiluted coat of a drywall primer or a good quality flat latex paint with high pigment solids. J2010 defines high solids as greater than 50% solids by weight, gives its Level 4 paint system as one primer coat and two coats of flat or matte paint, and cautions that not every 2-in-1 paint and primer equalizes the surface porosity. The paint calculator sizes the paint by the gallon.
Inspection. GA-214 sets the viewing position at a minimum of 5 ft, perpendicular to the surface, under the lighting that will be there when the room is finished, windows included. Blemishes should not be visible from there.
What the documents do not tell you
A few numbers that most finishing guides print are not in any of the sources read for this page, so they are not here either:
- Drying time between coats of ready-mix compound. The USG submittal says to let each coat dry and gives no hours.
- Knife widths for the second and third coats. The documents give feathering distances, about 2 in beyond the previous coat, not blade sizes. The only knife size printed is the 5 or 6 in knife for prefilling with setting compound.
- How much compound a Level 5 skim coat uses. Neither submittal publishes a rate for it, and GA-214 says there is no specific thickness.
- A grit for setting compound specifically. J2010's grit guidance is general to joint compound.

- How many coats of joint compound does drywall need?
- It depends on the level of finish. GA-214-2021 Level 4, the usual finish for smooth walls with flat paint, calls for the tape embedding coat plus two separate coats over flat joints, one over inside corners and three over fasteners. USG's All Purpose compound sheet asks for at least three coats on fasteners, corner bead and inside corners.
- What is the difference between a Level 4 and a Level 5 drywall finish?
- Level 5 is Level 4 plus a skim coat of joint compound, or a material made for the purpose, over the entire surface. GA-214 says it is typically specified for non-flat paints, dark or deep colors and critical lighting, and that Level 4 is not recommended under non-flat or deep tone paints.
- How long should joint compound dry between coats?
- The USG All Purpose submittal says to let each coat dry but does not publish a time. Setting-type compounds are different: USG Easy Sand 20, for example, has a published working time of 20 minutes and a setting time of 25 to 35 minutes.
- What grit sandpaper should I use on drywall compound?

- Can I use setting-type compound for a skim coat?
- USG says no. Its Easy Sand submittal says not to use setting-type compound for thin skim coats, and J2010 rules out all powder compounds, and topping compound, as skim coat material. It names conventional weight All Purpose ready-mix for the skim.
- What temperature does the room need to be for finishing drywall?
- GA-214-2021 asks for at least 50°F held continuously for 48 hours before and throughout finishing. USG's compound submittals set a minimum of 55°F during joint finishing, so holding 55°F meets both.
- Should I sand joint compound flush with the drywall?
