HomeAdvisor's inground pool guide, its size table checked against its own per square foot range

HomeAdvisor's inground pool guide says installation runs $90 to $250 per square foot. Every single price in its own size table works out to about $87 per square foot, below that floor, at every size from 12 by 24 to 20 by 40. This calculator prices your pool from both, adds the type and the extras, and gives the gallons.

The page title carries the current year; the date printed on the article is June 10, 2024. A replacement liner at $2,000 to $5,000 can cost more than the $800 to $4,500 it gives for the pool itself.

Worked example

A 14 by 28 ft vinyl pool, 5 ft deep on average, with no extras.

  1. Area. 14 × 28 = 392 sq ft. Water. 392 × 5 × 7.48 = 14,662 gallons.
  2. Per square foot. 392 × $90 to $250 = $35,280 to $98,000.
  3. Size table. Its 14x28 row is $34,000, which is $86.73 per sq ft.
  4. Vinyl, whole project. $40,000 to $75,000.

The table's own row for this exact pool is below the low end of the guide's per square foot range and below its cheapest pool type.

The formula

Area and volume from the dimensions, then the guide's rates:

cost = length × width × $90 to $250 + extras    gallons = length × width × depth × 7.48

7.48 is 1,728 cubic inches in a cubic foot divided by 231 in a US gallon.

Where the numbers come from

Every price is HomeAdvisor's, from its inground pool guide updated 19 June 2026 and read on 16 September 2026.

The gallons are arithmetic. The per square foot figures for the size table are this page's division of the guide's prices by the guide's pool dimensions.

The size table sits below the guide's own floor

HomeAdvisor's guide says most homeowners budget $90 to $250 per square foot for installation. The same guide has a table of pool sizes, and six of its seven rows give a single price. Divide each by the pool's area:

HomeAdvisor inground pool guide, updated June 2026
SizeAreaTable pricePer sq ft
12 x 24288 sq ft$25,200$87.50
14 x 28392 sq ft$34,000$86.73
15 x 30450 sq ft$39,400$87.56
16 x 32512 sq ft$44,800$87.50
18 x 36648 sq ft$56,700$87.50
20 x 40800 sq ft$70,000$87.50

Four of the six are exactly $87.50 a square foot, and all six are under the $90 the guide gives as the bottom of the range. The table is one rate multiplied by area, and it is not the rate the text gives.

The seventh row, 10 by 20 ft at $10,000 to $25,000, is further off: $10,000 is a quarter of the $40,000 the guide gives as the least a vinyl pool costs, its cheapest type.

Type, size and extras are three separate prices

The guide prices pool type as a whole project: vinyl $40,000 to $75,000, fiberglass $55,000 to $100,000 and concrete $65,000 to $120,000. Those ranges do not say what size they assume, so this page does not scale them.

The extras are also whole items: a deck $3,000 to $12,000, a fence $1,500 to $10,000, a heater $300 to $5,700 and a saltwater system $500 to $3,300. The guide says fencing is often required, and it gives upkeep of $3,000 to $5,000 a year.

The water volume matters for the heater, the chemicals and the pump, and it is simple arithmetic: a 14 by 28 ft pool averaging 5 ft deep holds about 14,700 gallons.
