The IRC sets two spiral stair limits that pull against each other. Each tread must be at least 6 3/4 in deep at the walkline, which needs a wide tread angle, and there must be 6 ft 6 in of headroom, which needs many treads per turn. The source's ranges assume a stair 8.5 ft tall and 3.5 ft wide, and it does not say how many steps that is.

Worked example

108 in floor to floor, a 20 in walkline radius, turning a full 360 degrees, in steel.

  1. Risers. 108 ÷ 9.5 = 11.4, so 12 risers at 9 in.
  2. Tread angle. 360 ÷ 12 = 30 degrees. Depth at the walkline. 20 × 30 × π ÷ 180 = 10.47 in.
  3. One full turn. 12 treads × 9 in = 108 in.
  4. Rotation limits. 6 3/4 in treads need at least 233 degrees; 78 in per turn allows up to 498 degrees.

At this radius a quarter turn more or less makes no difference to the code. What decides the rotation is where the top step has to land.

The formula

The code limits, turned into the arithmetic of a helix:

Minimum rotation = risers × (6.75 ÷ radius) in radians; maximum = risers × 360 × rise ÷ 78.

Where the numbers come from

The limits are 2015 IRC Section R311.7.10.1, as reproduced in Associated Building Inspections' Residential Stair Geometry guide. That document marks the Pennsylvania amendments inline; R311.7.10.1 carries none. Check the edition and amendments your jurisdiction adopted.

Two limits that pull the rotation in opposite directions

R311.7.10.1 allows a spiral stairway where the clear width at and below the handrail is at least 26 in, the walkline radius is not more than 24 1/2 in, each tread is at least 6 3/4 in deep at the walkline, all treads are identical, the rise is not more than 9 1/2 in and the headroom is at least 6 ft 6 in.

Two of those fight each other. The tread depth at the walkline is the arc between two nosings, so a deeper tread needs a bigger angle per step. Headroom is the height of one full turn, so it needs more steps in each turn, which means a smaller angle per step.

The headroom limit does not depend on the radius, only on the rise. The tread limit tightens as the walkline moves in. At a 9 1/2 in rise the largest angle is 43.8 degrees, and a walkline radius under about 8.8 in cannot meet both.

Where the rotation actually comes from

Once the risers are set by the floor height, the rotation is usually decided by the plan: where the bottom step starts and which way the top step lets you off. Inside the code's window, a spiral can be designed to finish facing the opening.

For a 108 in floor height at 12 risers and a 20 in walkline, the window runs from 233 to 498 degrees. A stair that has to exit at a quarter turn past a full circle, 450 degrees, is inside it; one that exits after three quarters of a turn, 270 degrees, is also inside it.

The height of one full turn is not the headroom. Headroom is measured to whatever is above, which is the underside of the tread one turn up, or the edge of the floor opening. Tread thickness and the floor structure both come off.

What a spiral staircase costs

HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide gives $3,000 to $15,000 for a typical installation, $10,400 on average. By material, steel kits are $1,000 to $4,400, wrought or cast iron $1,000 to $4,600, composite $4,000 to $8,000, and wood, aluminum and glass $2,000 or $2,500 up to $20,000. Labor is $2,000 to $10,000 or more at $70 to $150 an hour.

The guide says its ranges assume a stair 8.5 ft tall and 3.5 ft wide, and adds $150 to $300 for each step beyond that height. It does not say how many steps its 8.5 ft stair has, so this page shows the extra height but does not price it.
