Spiral Staircase Calculator
2015 IRC R311.7.10.1 spiral stairways; prices from HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide
The IRC sets two spiral stair limits that pull against each other. Each tread must be at least 6 3/4 in deep at the walkline, which needs a wide tread angle, and there must be 6 ft 6 in of headroom, which needs many treads per turn. This calculator finds the risers for your floor height and the range of rotation that satisfies both.
The stair
Rotation is how far the stair turns from the bottom step to the top floor. The walkline radius is measured from the center of the column.

Worked example
- Risers. 108 ÷ 9.5 = 11.4, so 12 risers at 9 in.
- Tread angle. 360 ÷ 12 = 30 degrees. Depth at the walkline. 20 × 30 × π ÷ 180 = 10.47 in.
- One full turn. 12 treads × 9 in = 108 in.
- Rotation limits. 6 3/4 in treads need at least 233 degrees; 78 in per turn allows up to 498 degrees.
The formula
- angle
- rotation ÷ risers, degrees per step
- radius
- walkline radius, in
- turn height
- vertical distance between a tread and the one directly above it

Frequently asked questions
- What are the code requirements for a spiral staircase?
- Under 2015 IRC R311.7.10.1: clear width at least 26 in at and below the handrail, walkline radius not more than 24 1/2 in, treads at least 6 3/4 in deep at the walkline and all identical, rise not more than 9 1/2 in, and headroom at least 6 ft 6 in.
- How many steps does a spiral staircase need?
- Divide the floor to floor height by 9 1/2 in and round up to get the risers. A 108 in height needs 12 risers at 9 in, which is 11 treads plus the top floor.
- How much does it cost to install a spiral staircase?
- HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide gives $3,000 to $15,000, $10,400 on average. Steel kits are $1,000 to $4,400 and labor $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
- How much headroom does a spiral staircase need?
- At least 6 ft 6 in under R311.7.10.1, against 6 ft 8 in for a standard stair under R311.7.2. On a spiral that means one full turn has to rise more than 78 in plus the tread thickness.
- What is the minimum tread depth on a spiral stair?
- 6 3/4 in measured at the walkline under R311.7.10.1, against 10 in at the walkline for winder treads on a standard stair.
- Can a spiral staircase have open risers?
- Yes. R311.7.5.1 exception 1 says the opening between adjacent treads is not limited on spiral stairways.
