Worked example

A 40 ft by 25 ft back lawn, southern slabs, 5% waste, using the honest 399 sq ft pallet.

Area. 1,000 sq ft, plus 5% waste for cuts and curves = 1,050 sq ft.
Pallets. At 399 sq ft that is 3 pallets, covering 1,197 sq ft.
Left over. 147 sq ft, or about 56 slabs. That is a lot of sod to compost.
Enter 400 instead and the warning fires: 400 is the marketed figure and the pallet actually holds 399.
The trap. A 1,197 sq ft job ordered as exactly 3 pallets of 400 comes up 3 sq ft short, and sod cannot be topped up next week.

The last point is the one that matters. Sod is perishable and should be laid within a day of harvest, so a short order is not a trip back to the yard, it is a second delivery of a different batch with a visible seam.

The formula

Area over coverage, rounded up. The only interesting term is the one you have to ask for:

A: area to turf, sq ft, including the odd strips people forget
waste: allowance for cuts around beds and curves. 5% on a rectangle, more on a shaped lawn
c: what YOUR producer puts on a pallet. This is the term everyone assumes

Waste is genuinely higher on a curved lawn than a rectangular one, because every curve is cut from a straight-edged piece and the offcut is rarely reusable. On a lawn with island beds, 10% is closer than 5%.

Where the 450 figure came from, and why it is wrong

Four hundred and fifty square feet is a real pallet size. It is just not the only one, and it is not even one of the honest ones. Sod Solutions, a turfgrass breeder and producer, publishes slab pallets at 399, 452 and 503 sq ft, marketed as 400, 450 and 500.

The variation is bigger than the rounding. Region decides the cut: southern warm-season grasses come as 16 by 24 in slabs, northern cool-season ones as rolls, and a large-roll pallet can hold 700 sq ft against a slab pallet's 400. Ordering by a remembered number is ordering by the wrong number most of the time.

The producer is explicit that it varies, saying pallet sizes differ mainly because of shipping weight and height preferences. Harvest moisture, soil type and grass type all change what fits on a pallet at a safe weight.

So the coverage field on this page is an input with a default of 399 rather than 450, and the calculator warns when you type a marketed figure. Ring the farm. It is one phone call and it is the only number in the whole calculation you cannot derive.

Almost every sod calculator divides your area by 450 and tells you how many pallets to order. A pallet is not 450 sq ft. It is whatever your farm puts on a pallet, and the producer says so:

Two things fall out of that table. First, the region decides the format: the southern warm-season grasses come as 16 by 24 in slabs, the northern cool-season ones as rolls, and a large-roll pallet can be 700 sq ft against a slab pallet's 400.

Second, and more useful: the marketed pallet size is rounded. A slab pallet sold as 400 sq ft actually holds 399, one sold as 450 holds 452, and one sold as 500 holds 503. Those are small differences, but they run the wrong way on the smallest pallet, and they are the reason a job that measures exactly to a pallet ends up a slab short.

So this calculator asks for your pallet size rather than assuming one, defaults to the honest 399 rather than the marketed 400, and adds a waste allowance on top. Ring your producer and enter their number.
