Patio Cost Calculator

HomeAdvisor's patio guide by material, checked against its own flagstone guide

HomeAdvisor prices a patio at $5 to $50 per square foot, a factor of ten. The size of the patio does not explain that spread; the material does. Gravel is $1 to $4 a square foot and granite $10 to $35 in the same guide. This calculator prices your patio in the material you choose and sets it beside the figures the same publisher gives elsewhere.

The size table is the $5 to $50 per sq ft range times the area at every size, so it cannot show the claim on the same page that a larger patio costs less per square foot. The stone rows are given as what the patio costs, not as material alone.

Source: HomeAdvisor, how much does a flagstone patio cost. Last price check: September 26, 2026.

The source prices a typical 300 sq ft patio at $750 to $8,400. At its own $15 to $30 per sq ft, 300 sq ft is $4,500 to $9,000.

Worked example

A 16 by 12 ft patio in concrete pavers, with no extras.

  1. Area. 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft.
  2. Pavers. 192 × $4.50 to $21 = $864 to $4,032.
  3. Any patio at the guide's overall rate. 192 × $5 to $50 = $960 to $9,600.

The material row narrows the answer to less than half the width of the guide's overall range.

The formula

Area times the published rate for the material, plus the extras the guide lists:

cost = length × width × material rate + removal + leveling + permit
material rate
HomeAdvisor's installed range per sq ft
removal
$2 to $6 per sq ft
leveling
$500 to $1,000
permit
$50 to $200

Ranges are added low to low and high to high, so the total is wider than any real quote.

Where the numbers come from

Every price is HomeAdvisor's, from its patio guide updated 17 June 2026 and reviewed by Ezra Laniado, and its flagstone patio guide updated 20 June 2026, both read on 26 September 2026. The concrete comparison is Lawn Love's patio article.

The area arithmetic and the side-by-side comparisons are this page's.

The material sets the price, not the size

HomeAdvisor's patio guide gives installed prices per square foot by material. Read top to bottom they cover a factor of 35:

HomeAdvisor patio guide, updated June 2026, per sq ft
MaterialPer sq ft12 x 16 ft patio
Gravel or pea gravel$1 to $4$192 to $768
Concrete$3 to $8$576 to $1,536
Concrete pavers$4.50 to $21$864 to $4,032
Travertine$5 to $15$960 to $2,880
Brick pavers$8 to $25$1,536 to $4,800
Slate$10 to $30$1,920 to $5,760
Granite$10 to $35$1,920 to $6,720

The guide also says a larger patio costs less per square foot. Its size table does not show it: every row, from 7 by 7 ft to 20 by 20 ft, is the same $5 to $50 multiplied by the area. So the table is a restatement of the rate, not evidence about size, and a quote for a large patio that comes in lower per foot is consistent with the text, not the table.

One publisher, three prices for flagstone

The patio guide groups sandstone and flagstone at $3 to $35 per square foot. HomeAdvisor's own flagstone guide, updated three days later, gives $15 to $30. The same flagstone guide prices a typical 300 sq ft flagstone patio at $750 to $8,400, which at its own per foot rate would be $4,500 to $9,000.

The $15 to $30 is the figure built for flagstone, and it is the one the calculator shows beside the patio guide's range when flagstone is chosen. The flagstone patio calculator works out the stone, the base and the sand, and the flagstone guide explains why the laying method decides the stone thickness.

What else goes on the bill

The guide lists three extras that are not in the per foot rate. Removing an old patio is $2 to $6 per square foot. Leveling the yard is $500 to $1,000, and up to $5,000 where the ground is steep or drains badly. A permit, where one is required, is $50 to $200.

It puts labor at about half the total, $5 to $20 per square foot. A raised patio, built on a concrete layer above grade, is $10 to $85 per square foot.
