Flagstone Patio Calculator
Coverage per ton from a supplier's own sheet, published as a range
Every flagstone calculator divides your area by one coverage number, and they all use a different one. They are not all wrong. Flagstone is sold by a nominal thickness that is a ceiling rather than a measurement: stone sold as 1 1/4 in arrives at 3/4 in to 1 1/4 in, so coverage per ton is genuinely a range. This uses the range.
Flagstone order
Coverage from a stone supplier's published sheet. Both ends of their range are shown, because both are real.

Worked example
- Area. 225 sq ft, plus 10% waste = 247.5 sq ft of stone.
- The range. Select Regular covers 115 to 125 sq ft per ton, so that is 1.98 to 2.15 tons.
- Order the high one. 2.2 tons, because the supplier's low coverage figure is the thick-stone case and you cannot go back for a matching half ton of natural stone.
- Switch to Patio Stone. The range opens to 70 to 140 sq ft per ton and the answer becomes 1.77 to 3.54 tons, a two-to-one spread from one product.
- Switch to Select Thin with sand set and the warning fires: the supplier reserves the thin grade for a cement base.
The formula
- A
- patio area, sq ft
- w
- waste. 10% for a cut pattern, more for irregular flag
- j
- the share of the area taken by joints, which for wide-jointed irregular flag is real
- c
- coverage, sq ft per ton. The LOW coverage gives the HIGH tonnage
- order
- always the high figure. Stone is sold by weight and laid by area
The word is minus, and it is doing a lot of work

Frequently asked questions
- How many square feet does a ton of flagstone cover?
- It depends on the grade, and the honest answer is a range. One supplier publishes 140 to 160 sq ft per ton for 1 1/4 in minus, 115 to 125 for 1 3/4 in minus, 80 to 90 for 2 in heavy, and 70 to 140 for its patio grade. The spread exists because nominal thickness is a ceiling, not a measurement.
- How much flagstone do I need for a 15x15 patio?
- About 2.2 tons in 1 3/4 in minus with a 10% waste allowance, taking the supplier's low coverage figure. At the high end of their range it is 1.98 tons, and you order the high figure because natural stone rarely matches when you go back for more.
- What thickness flagstone should I use?
- It follows from how you are laying it. The supplier directs sand set installations to 1 3/4 in stone and permits 1 1/4 in on a cement base. Thin stone on sand has nothing holding it together and cracks, so choose the method first.
- What does minus mean in flagstone grades?
- That the nominal thickness is a ceiling. Stone sold as 1 1/4 in minus runs from about 3/4 in up to 1 1/4 in on the same pallet. It is why coverage per ton is published as a range.
- How heavy is a pallet of flagstone?
- About 3,500 lb for the select grades and around 4,000 lb for patio stone, per this supplier. That is a machine to move, not a wheelbarrow, and delivery access is worth checking before ordering.
- How much does flagstone cost per square foot?
- Lawn Love published $13 to $30 per square foot for flagstone material in December 2025. That is somebody else's figure, attributed and dated; this site publishes no price of its own.
- Should I allow for the joints between irregular flagstones?
- Yes, if you are laying irregular flag with wide joints, because that area is filled with sand or mortar rather than stone. The calculator has a field for it. For a cut and fitted pattern it is close to zero.

Coverage varies by supplier and by quarry. The figures here are one stone yard's published sheet and yours will differ. Natural stone is not a manufactured product: order from the high end of the range, and check delivery access before ordering pallets that weigh nearly two tons each.
