Electrical Work Cost Estimator

HomeAdvisor's electrician and outlet guides, device prices separated from the job

An outlet costs $3 to $5 and installing one costs $200 to $300, by the same publisher's two guides. This estimator adds up published electrician rates and jobs, shows the receptacle prices separately so it is clear what the money buys, and leaves out a row its source never explains: a $1,000 to $1,400 outdoor outlet in a table of $3 devices.

Source: HomeAdvisor, how much does an electrician cost. Last price check: September 13, 2026.

The source gives $163 to $538 for a typical call-out, $351 on average, and does not say which job rows include the fixture or device itself. A job priced here is not a panel or service upgrade, which the electrical load calculator prices from a separate guide.

Worked example

Three outlets and two light fixtures installed.

  1. Outlets. 3 × $200 to $300 = $600 to $900.
  2. Light fixtures. 2 × $155 to $955 = $310 to $1,910.
  3. Total. $910 to $2,810.

The light fixture range carries most of the spread, because a fixture can be a $20 flush mount or a chandelier; the source does not say which.

The formula

Each job's published range times the number of jobs, then summed:

total = Σ (job low to job high) × count, plus hours × hourly rate
job
an outlet, switch, fixture or fan installation as the source prices it
hourly rate
apprentice, journeyperson or master electrician
service call
the first hour, where charged

The device itself is priced apart in the outlet table below; the job ranges already contain the electrician's time.

Why this page prints a price at all

This site does not publish prices of its own. It quotes dated, bylined ranges and adds them up for you.

Putting two guides from one publisher side by side shows what the bill is mostly for: the device is a few dollars, and the job is labour, cable and the circuit.

What the outlet costs, against what installing it costs

HomeAdvisor's outlet guide prices the receptacle itself separately from the job:

As published by HomeAdvisor, updated June 20, 2026
ItemLowHighUnit
Standard 120 V receptacle$3$5per receptacle
Heavy duty 220 V or 240 V receptacle$10$20per receptacle
GFCI receptacle$7$25per receptacle
AFCI receptacle$20$30per receptacle
USB receptacle$20$40per receptacle
Smart receptacle$25$50per receptacle
Electrician$50$100per hour

The device is a small part of the bill. A standard receptacle is $3 to $5 and a 240 volt one $10 to $20; the same publisher's electrician guide puts outlet installation at $200 to $300 a job, and its outlet guide puts a typical job at $138 to $320. What a 240 volt outlet costs is mostly the circuit: breaker, cable and the run back to the panel.

One row is left out. The outlet table lists an outdoor outlet at $1,000 to $1,400 among receptacles priced from $3 to $50, without saying it includes a circuit and labour.

What the electrical estimate covers, and what it leaves out

Small jobs only. The source prices outlets, switches, light fixtures and fans. A new circuit, a panel or a service upgrade is a different job, priced on the electrical load calculator from a separate guide.

The fixture is usually extra. The source does not say whether its light fixture range includes the fixture, and $155 to $955 is wide enough to cover both answers.

Adding jobs adds their spreads, so three outlets and two fixtures come to a range that no single visit would span.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an electrician cost per hour?
HomeAdvisor's June 2026 guide gives $40 to $60 an hour for an apprentice, $60 to $90 for a journeyperson and $90 to $120 for a master electrician, with a service call of $100 to $200 for the first hour.
How much does it cost to install an outlet?
HomeAdvisor's electrician guide gives $200 to $300 a job; its outlet guide gives $138 to $320 for a typical job, $229 on average. The receptacle itself is $3 to $5 for standard, $7 to $25 for GFCI.
How much does a 240 volt outlet cost to install?
The receptacle is $10 to $20 in HomeAdvisor's outlet guide. Most of the cost is the dedicated circuit: breaker, cable and the run from the panel, which neither guide prices as a separate row.
How much does it cost to install a light fixture?
HomeAdvisor gives $155 to $955, depending on the fixture, which it does not specify.
How much does it cost to replace a GFCI outlet?
The GFCI receptacle is $7 to $25 in HomeAdvisor's outlet guide, plus the electrician's time; its electrician guide prices an outlet installation job at $200 to $300.
Is a new circuit included in outlet installation?
The source does not say. A 240 volt outlet or an outlet where there was none usually needs a new circuit from the panel, which costs more than replacing an existing receptacle.
